Day 18 - Plans Start to Come Together

Wednesday 27 July 2016

Mick is determined to make the most of the ashes of his holiday so before 9am he borrows Sean's bike and comes with me to see some of the roads and spectacular views I have been raving about for the last few days.

Mick gets back on the road

We head up the main road that runs along the spine of the island, as far as Corte in the centre of the Haut Corse region. This is the area with the highest peaks in Corsica rising to over two and a half thousand metres.

Climbing the gorge

It is a fast sweeper of a road and we are through Corte in no time at all. Now we turn off west into an area of the most outstanding natural beauty. We find another gorge road that climbs up high through a narrow ravine on a corniche road that clings to the sheer wall of the gorge. It's called the Gorges de Asoo.

Finally we breast the summit and ride down then up even higher through dark, gloomy pine forests. We stop for a rather average lunch at a mountain cafe that is the haunt of fell-walkers and mountain bikers.

Mick has definitely got the GS worked out now. Try as I might I cannot shake him through the twisties. He is finally realising what the bike is capable of. At first it had seemed heavy and unresponsive, but with the panniers and dry bags off it becomes an altogether different animal.

Finally we drop off the mountain and down to the west coast for the return run along the rocky shore with occasional sandy beaches and lots of beach tourism.

Mick getting the hang of the GS

In the early evening Mick spends a long time on the phone to the insurance company back in England. He reluctantly decides to take their offer of scrapping the bike and returning home by air.

Sean has decided to call it a day too. The repairs in France has knocked a big hole in his holiday budget and he is looking for the fastest and simplest way to get home and start earning some money again.

We get back for a swim in the camp pools and reflecting on the impending parting of the ways get in the tents for an early night.
