Day 14 - Chilling out in Corsica

Saturday 23rd July 2016

There is thunder in the night and a few big drops of rain fall. It continues into the early morning but it has been a warm night and by 9am the sun has burned away the clouds and it looks like another scorchio day in prospect.

Our pitch at Camping Prunelli

It was very dark when we pitched our tents last night and in the light of day we find that we have chosen a very small area by the side of one of the camp roads. We really should move our camp to a better spot but it is handy for the water point and not far from the main complex. Anyway it is getting hot and the camp shop bakes it's own baguettes and croissants. The smell wafting down as I walk up there is wonderful.

Pools to the left of me....

...and pools to the right

It is a great looking camp with deep shade under the trees and two or three swimming pools. Before 10 we are in the pool. It is too hot to ride until evening so a day chilling out and swimming seems a good choice.

The clouds are gathering over the mountains again by late afternoon. Mick and Sean have long ago given in to the lure of a beer or three so I'm riding solo tonight. THere may be a thunderstorm to give me a soaking but the Corsican mountains are calling.

On the road to Tolla

I have a planned route up past the lake at Tolla and up a dead end road to a ski hut at Val d'Ese.

The road is like a farmyard. I come round a corner to be confronted by pigs, then cattle and then goats. Only the sheep and chickens are missing.

It is quite cold at the summit. I have a lousy cup of coffee at the ski and horse-riding hut at the summit then beat it back down to the plain far below. The temperature rises with each kilometre of descent.

I have been thinking of my mum a lot today. She died last October. Today would have been her 91st birthday.
